Common questions from newcomers about getting a driver’s licence in Alberta.

Yes, as a newcomer you can drive in Alberta using your foreign licence for up to 90 days. After that, you must obtain an Alberta driver’s licence. Some countries have licence exchange agreements with Alberta that may allow you to skip the knowledge test.

The knowledge test fee is approximately $17 CAD, paid at the registry office. You will also need to pay for your learner’s licence card. HANA Calgary can help you prepare so you pass on your first attempt and avoid retake fees.

You typically need: government-issued photo ID (passport, PR card, or provincial ID), proof of Alberta residency (utility bill, lease agreement, or bank statement), and your Social Insurance Number (SIN) or Temporary Resident document if applicable. Contact the registry for the latest requirements.

GDL stands for Graduated Driver Licensing. After passing the knowledge test, you get a Class 7 (learner’s) licence. After at least 12 months of driving with restrictions, you can take a road test to get your full Class 5 licence. HANA Calgary will guide you through each stage.

The Alberta Class 7 knowledge test has 30 questions. You need to answer at least 25 correctly (83%) to pass. The test covers road signs, traffic laws, and safe driving practices — all topics covered in our video series.
